One of Australia’s most popular whale watching locations

Whale Watching Byron Bay is Byron Bay’s most professional whale watching tour operator. We conduct smaller more personalised tours with a maximum of only 12 whale watchers per vessel. Tours depart Byron Bay every day during the whale watching season (June to November).

Every year thousands of Humpback whales leave their summer feeding grounds in Antarctica and head north towards their winter breeding grounds in the tropical waters of the Southern Hemisphere. One group of Humpback whales makes this annual migration up the Australian east coast from May through to December.

This journey not only takes these whales past Australia’s most eastern point but also concentrates the migrating whales to within a few kilometres of Cape Byron. For this reason, Byron Bay is one of Australia’s premier whale watching locations.

The migratory path of Australia’s east coast Humpback whales brings them so close to Byron Bay that they are often sighted within a few hundred meters of Cape Byron. Whale Watching Byron Bay employs observers to pin point each whale’s location, often allowing encounters with whales within minutes of departing Byron Bay.

Whale Watching Byron Bay conducts interpretive and scientific whale watching tours. Each vessel incorporates the use of a hydrophone to listen to the Humpback “whale song”. Experienced guides who are conversant with whale biology and behaviour will pass on informative facts about Humpback whales.
